It’s a big moment for you, one you’ve waited for four years or even more. And yet you don’t really want it to come. Saying goodbye to college and friends you’ve known and loved all these years is painful indeed, but when it’s compounded by the fear and anticipation that you must go out and face the world as an adult, make your mark and earn your living with a suitable career, you hardly know what to feel anymore. One thing that college does is prepare you for your life ahead – even if you choose not to work, you leave school more enriched and full of experience. But if you’re looking to find a job and get ahead in your career, here’s what you need to do:

·       Enhance your skills: If you’re looking for a job in a particular industry, you need to ensure that you have the necessary skills to make the cut. College may not have taught you all you need to know, so it’s up to you to hone those skills through practice, internship positions or even temporary work gigs. Employers are looking for people with that something extra that gives them an edge over their co-workers, so it’s up to you to make sure you have the advantage.
·       Play to your strengths: There’s no use attempting to wedge your way into a job that pays well and brings prestige but which you have no aptitude for. As far as you’re concerned, you must try to be king of your castle rather than a slave in another’s, no matter how small your own castle is. This means you must play to your strengths and choose a career that is suited to your temperament and attitude.
·       Continue the learning process: Even after you’ve secured a good job, you must continue to keep learning in order to keep up with the times and stay ahead of your coworkers. Knowledge gained is never useless, so use your time wisely to keep yourself updated so that you don’t get rusty and become bored with your job. Monotony is a killer, of enthusiasm and progress. So avoid it with continuous learning.
·       Be humble: No matter how high you climb up the career ladder, stay humble and down to earth. Don’t ignore the people who helped you up or those who got left behind as you made your way to the top. Always keep your feet firmly grounded because you never know when you may tumble off the perch you’re on now.
·       Work hard: Finally, and most important of all, you must work hard no matter what your line of work. Without dedication and discipline on the job, you don’t have even a tiny chance of success. Luck may be on your side for a while, but it’s hard work that will sustain you for the rest of your life.
